New Stove

We live in a wonderful house here in Bangalore, one of the few negatives about it was that the stove only had three burners. So I went in search for another one with more burners and found a nice one with five. Yesterday morning I ordered it and was promised it would be delivered and installed that same evening before six.
In a country where five minutes can mean anything from half an hour to a day, I wasn't expecting them to show up before six. No surprise when they called at 18:15 hr, to proudly announce they indeed had the stove for me and would come to the house.  At eight o'clock I felt it got a bit late so I made a phone call to the shop and was promised it would be there in 15 minutes. Long story short: 20:45 hr the doorbell rang and in came my new stove. The man put the box down in the kitchen and told me he had no clue how to install the stove....
He would come back today with a mechanic. I asked what time he would be here and he said: "Any time ma'am, you say." So I suggested 9 am, hoping it would get him to show up before lunch time. "OK madam, no problem, you call me tomorrow at 10:00 o'clock to set a time."

This morning he arrived at 11 o'clock, alone...he would give it a try. He left again half an hour later to get a mechanic because it didn't fit.
I would like to point out that I had measured the old stove and made sure the new stove (of the same brand) was the same size. I also asked at least twice if it indeed was the same size. Just so you now it wasn't me being blond!

The mechanic came and figured out in two minutes that it indeed did not fit, so they set off to find a guy to cut a few millimetres from the marble.
An hour later the smoke detectors were beeping like mad, my kitchen was covered in a thick layer of dust (black marble still gives white dust) and I noticed the grinder had been powered by sticking two wires in the socket...but the stove fits!

Kavitha and I have been cleaning the kitchen for the better part of an hour to get rid of the dust, but like Cruijf said: "Every disadvantage has it's advantage.", my kitchen is spotless.

Back to normal

We have been back in Bangalore for almost a week now and it finally feels normal again. Somehow it took a long time this time to get over our jet lag. It was really hard to get back into the routine of getting up early and having everyone and everything ready for the school bus in time.

School is back into full swing with lots of home work to be made and tests to be studied for and A is swamped by meetings and emails again.

Besides the early wake up calls, I have eased in to normal life again. Coffee morning on Monday, slum on Tuesday, coffee with friends on Wednesday, followed by a nice lunch...

Today I will go on a hunt for big plastic storage boxes, so I can tackle the stuff in the garage (unpacked boxes from Libya) and I will order a new stove. The stove I have now only has 3 burners, so it is way too small. When the landlord came to visit a few weeks ago, he gave me money to buy a stove with more burners. I saw a nice one with 5 burners and a ceramic base, so that will be the one I will order today, so they can install in tomorrow.

So, nothing fancy to write about, it is all just 'normal' around here.

Happy New Year

We celebrated New Year at my parent's house, with my brother and his family. Mum made Oliebollen and Appelflappen and my brother and I made Kniepertjes. We had a good time.

Oliebollen

Nieuwjaarsrolletjes (to be filled with whipped cream!)

Today we all slept in big time, had break fast that consisted of oliebollen and coffee at 11:00 and then headed for A's mum's for a late lunch (Erwtensoep) and more coffee.

Tomorrow I will be packing the suitcases and cleaning the house. Thursday we will fly back to Bangalore. The past two and a half weeks have gone by so fast.

Christmas

Christmas was as it should be: with family! We all came to my sister's house for Xmas dinner on the 26th. She has a big house with a spacious living room and a huge table, so we fitted easily. The kids had fun in the play room and we were our usual loud selves.

We were all set to go to A's mum on the 25th, when A pulled a muscle in his back and couldn't move anymore (just because he put a cup in the dish washer). He spent most of the day in bed and could only move like an old man for days after.

No, I am not from Holland!

I am Dutch because I come from The Netherlands. I am NOT from Holland, because I was born in Groningen, but I do have a house in (South) Holland. Any non-Dutch readers that still understand?

This You Tube clip might explain it (click on the link):

We are in NL for the Christmas Holidays. It is cold, it is dark and it rains. The house is warm and cosy. Let the Holiday Hysteria begin.....

Procrastinating

Today is one of the rare days that I don't have to go out, so I decided to make today the day to pack the suitcases.
I have some mega packing to do. The boxes from Libya contained a lot of clothes. They have all be washed, ironed and sorted. Many of them have gone to new homes (I have seen gardeners cycling around in t shirts from the boys' school uniforms from Libya), but part of it has to go to NL. I have lovely woollen cardigans from Ireland, that I won't be needing here in India for instance.
So after all the washing and sorting I now have to sort it all out again... The aim is to take things to NL that can stay there, so in future I won't have to pack so much, because A and I will have a complete wardrobe in each house. Sounds like a plan...problem is that I don't like packing at all.

So I am procrastinating (love that word): I first checked my email and read blogs, then decided I should write this blog, now I will have coffee with Kavitha and THEN I will start...I think...
